Autologous bone marrow cell studies for stroke, Parkinson's and vision loss, treated in Coral Springs, Florida
MD Stem Cells treats patients inside registered clinical studies rather than as a conventional clinic. The neurologic arm is NEST, the Neurologic Stem Cell Treatment Study (NCT02795052), and the eye arm is SCOTS 2, the Stem Cell Ophthalmology Treatment Study II (NCT03011541). Both list MD Stem Cells as sponsor and both are still recruiting. The group has sponsored registered studies since 2012. Steven Levy, MD is chairman and study director and runs protocol design and oversight. Jeffrey Weiss, MD, a retina specialist certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is principal investigator and performs the procedures in Florida. Everything here uses the patient's own bone marrow, so there is no donor tissue involved. Marrow is aspirated under local anaesthetic with sedation, processed the same day, and given back as an intravenous infusion together with an intranasal application to the lower nasal passages, which the NEST protocol uses as a route toward the central nervous system. NEST enrols chronic stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and peripheral neuropathy, and stroke recovery is one of its larger categories. The eye side covers macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, Stargardt disease, optic neuropathy and glaucoma, delivered retrobulbar, sub-Tenon or intravenously. A visit runs about three days, covering evaluation, the procedure, then a post-procedure check before travelling home. US treatment takes place in Coral Springs, Florida. The Westport, Connecticut address is the company's administrative and enrolment office, and a second treatment site operates in Dubai. These are investigational procedures conducted within registered studies, not FDA-approved standard care, and participants pay a fee to take part. MD Stem Cells publishes no price list and reviews medical records before offering a place. Reported outcomes vary between individuals.
